Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 Scratch variant reveals.
Ever since I’ve known Chris Burnham, he’s had a dream.
Not sure if how many people know this but Chris Burnham, the artist on the upcoming Unstoppable Doom Patrol along with Batman Inc, and I used to share studio space along with some other artists in LA.
From 2015-2019, Burnham and I saw each other nearly every day in the studio where we talked (and argued) about our favorite comics, art, and just about everything else under the sun. The one thing he always mentioned was how he wanted to one day do a scratch off cover. (Like a lottery scratch off ticket.)
So of course when we were finally given the greenlight for the new Doom Patrol series that was something that was at the front of Burnham’s mind and I made sure to ask our editor, Ben Abernathy, if it was possible the first time we sat down to officially discuss the series. The great thing about Ben is he always tries to make it work no matter how crazy the idea and he started texting people in production at DC immediately.
Ben had already mentioned wanting to do variant covers that were character motivated (like a glow in the dark cover for Negative Man for issue 2) so I suggested our scratch off cover do something with Jane and a few of her 64 different super powered identities. That way the outcome of scratching off the cover could have a random result and add to the fun.
Burnham got to work and along with kickass colorist, Brian Reber, landed on this:
Because of the special nature of printing this cover we have to get in final orders for this by this Sunday January 29th. So if you want one or more of these then now is the time to let your comic shop know about it. You have until March 5th for the rest of the covers.
There’s five possible outcomes behind the mirror for the scratch off variant and now for the first time, I’m allowed to reveal what those outcomes are:
First up is THE CHIEF, Jane’s new alter created to lead the new Doom Patrol team. This isn’t just Jane wearing a mask but a wholly new identity.
Next up and fresh off her appearance in the LAZARUS PLANET: DARK FATE is the amazing CHAINSAW NUN:
CHAINSAW NUN is a deep cut for Jane’s alters and has only appeared among the other alters in the Underground. Burnham’s take on her is super rad and I can’t wait until you see her in action.
BLACK ANNIS should be a more recognizable alter for long time Doom Patrol fans. She manifested often in the classic Grant Morrison/Richard Case Doom Patrol run.
While not appearing as often, SUN DADDY is also another memorable alter from that run.
Finally we have another BRAND NEW alter named SHY. What’s her deal? You’ll have to read Unstoppable Doom Patrol to find out. I’ll give you a hint though, she’s TERRIFYING.
UNSTOPPABLE DOOM PATROL 1 hits stores on March 28th but the only way to guarantee you’ll get ahold of these covers is letting your comic shop know you want it this week.
You’ll hear more from me in the coming weeks about this book and the importance of preordering it. The plan is to do 6 issues a year of Doom Patrol sort of like a prestige TV series however the only way to make sure that happens is if the book sells well.
